Walking into any home, if you don’t see a fireplace there is something seriously missing. There might be other things that come and go throughout our lives. But, the fireplace will never be one of them.
Having a fireplace in the home is something we share as a world. In just about any family setting you have ever seen, there is a fireplace in the background. Sometimes, it’s the center of the family scene. We build our entire lives around the fireplace.
During the holiday season, we decorate the fireplace so that it’s a part of the season too. We hang stockings on the fireplace for Christmas. We place the menorah on the fireplace during Hanukkah. Santa comes down the fireplace to deliver gifts. We gather around the fireplace to open them and enjoy each other’s company. The fireplace has been with us during those special moments.
But, it’s more than just that. It’s the romantic setting that has led to the start of most of our families. A little wine, a little music, a little fire in the fireplace and kissing becomes a lifelong commitment to the children who come along nine months later. For most of the moments during their little lives, we spend talking to them, reading to them and enjoying each other’s company right there by the fireplace.
As our children grow up, we include the fireplace in many of the moments we share. We take pictures of them in their prom dresses and tuxedos, and the fireplace is in the picture. When they dress for their graduation, we line them up in front of the fireplace and capture that moment too. When they are making big decisions in their lives, we sit them down beside the fireplace and try to help them make those decisions. Where they will go to college? What career will be right for them? Who they will marry? And during all those conversations, the fireplace is always there right by our side helping us through those struggles we call life.
It’s unmistakable why it’s always there for us during the best parts of our lives. The crackling in the fireplace is warm and welcoming. It’s the soothing background sound we need when we are reading or trying to work on something. You can sit with a cup of coffee and stare out the window on a day you need to reflect. The crackling of the fire helps you relax making that moment that much more enjoyable.
I have walked in houses that have had a fireplace in every room. Traditionally, it was always in the living room. Then, ideas started to grow on us to put fireplaces in the den and in the basement. Now, it’s in the bedroom, the bathroom and outside on the patio. Portable fireplaces can be taken on camping trips. With a fireplace insert and some gel fuel, you can have a fireplace in the center of the room or wherever your imagination runs wild.
There will never be a day when the fireplace becomes obsolete. I can’t imagine a world where they don’t exist. Across the ages and for different styles, the fireplace just always seems to fit.
